Birdtober Day Thirty-One: African Wood-Owl

Day 31. I could write about a Burrowing Owl, which I've seen and loved, but I decided instead to write about the owl in my own yard here in Kampala. I mostly hear this species, but I've also seen it, in the Botanical Garden in Entebbe.

Awake, 2 AM

Hoots menacing, comforting

You're awake too, owl

What a beauty! Although those eyes do have a smidge of menace, haha. Great ending, Ruth. High five for your Birdtober accomplishment! ✋

Oh Ruth! Congratulations on your Birdtober! I took a peek at your Burrowing Owl --and giggled at the haiku...wondering if it was you or the owl doing that menacing hoot :) I love to wake in the night to the voice of an owl. Ours are usually off in the desert, sitting atop a saguaro, though I had a rather unintentional meet-up once with a Great Horned Owl. Just as I was opening the door to my balcony, it happened to be arcing and rising right in front of me up to the rooftop above. I'll never forget the feeling nor the sound of its mighty wings so close to my head.
