Poetry Friday: Summer

I just got my laptop back from being repaired today.  I've missed it like a limb!  Here's a bright and breezy summertime poem.  I hope you're enjoying summer as much as I am!

Summer
Come we to the summer, to the summer we will come,
For the woods are full of bluebells and the hedges full of bloom,
And the crow is on the oak a-building of her nest,
And love is burning diamonds in my true lover's breast;
She sits beneath the whitethorn a-plaiting of her hair,
And I will to my true lover with a fond request repair;
I will look upon her face, I will in her beauty rest,
And lay my aching weariness upon her lovely breast.

The clock-a-clay is creeping on the open bloom of May,
The merry bee is trampling the pinky threads all day,
And the chaffinch it is brooding on its grey mossy nest
In the whitethorn bush where I will lean upon my lover's breast;
I'll lean upon her breast and I'll whisper in her ear
That I cannot get a wink o'sleep for thinking of my dear;
I hunger at my meat and I daily fade away
Like the hedge rose that is broken in the heat of the day.

That IS a bright and breezy poem. I can't decide if my favorite bit is "love is burning diamonds in my true lover's breast;" or "The merry bee is trampling the pinky threads all day." Congrats on getting your laptop back!

As Tabatha hinted, that "burning diamonds" line has a certain something! Enjoy the summer, your rose photo is beautiful.

Happy about your laptop! And oh, such a poem makes me want to sing it! It is lovely. I love "For the woods are full of bluebells and the hedges full of bloom,/And the crow is on the oak a-building of her nest" Thanks, Ruth!

I had to look up "clock-a-clay" -- "you can tell time by counting the number of taps on the ground it takes to make a ladybug fly away." Love that and the poem. And yes, we don't realize how much we rely on our laptops until they aren't accessible! -- Christie @ https://wonderingandwondering.wordpress.com/

The "merry bees" just arrived here in the last week or so. I was despairing that they would return. I thought we'd finally gone and killed the last ones off. SO relieved to see them swarming my butterfly weed.

I cannot imagine losing my laptop! So glad you have it back....love this poem. It feels like I'm on a swing-set swinging back and forth, high up in the air as I read it.

"The merry bee is trampling the pinky threads all day..." Wonderful poem, Ruth. I saw big fat merry bees at the fireworks show tonight. They were flitting around my group and we did not appreciate their frolic. Thanks for sharing.
