Open an April window
let sunlight paint the air
stippling every dogwood
dappling daffodils with flair
Race to the garden
where woodpeckers drum
as hummingbirds thrum
in the blossoming Sweetgum
Sing as you set up the easels
dabble in the paints
echo the colors of lilac and phlox
commune without constraints
Breathe deeply the gifts of lilacs
rejoice in earth’s sweet offerings
feel renewed-give thanks at day’s end
remember long-ago springs
Bask in a royal spring meadow
romp like a golden-doodle pup!
startle the sleeping grasshoppers
delight in each flowering shrub…
Drinking in orange-blossom twilight
relax to the rhythm of stars dotting sky
as a passing Whip-poor-will gulps bugs

I remember Whip-o-wills from my childhood. I'd love to imitate their sound. Thanks for giving us this sound and an evening bird.
Wonderful selection Ruth, if not for their song you’d have to really search for the whip-poor-will as they seamlessly camouflage into their environment, thanks for adding another feathered friend! Hope all is well with you in your neck of the world.
Of course, you would add a bird to our springtime fun! When I clicked to listen, I immediately understood why we would hear rather than see this bird. I was worried for our grasshoppers, but relieved to discover a significant portion of their diet comes from moths, especially on moonlit nights. Congrats on your blog birthday. That's quite an accomplishment. And a line contributor every year to the progressive poem!
I so enjoy the process notes you added to determine what comes next. And what a great evening bird! Happy Blogiversary as well. - tanita
Love "hearing" that whip-poor-will, Ruth, & that you added another bird. I remember them from my childhood!
Yay for 18 years of goodness! You are a champion, my friend.
