Here's a story about a book on your list. The daughter of our school principal is in the same class as my oldest son (3rd and 4th grades combined). She (the principal) wanted her daughter to read The Westing Game, but the daughter wasn't interested. So the principal volunteered to do read-aloud for the class, and read the book to them! Then she had to read it to at least 1 other 3-4 class (I'm not sure if she eventually read it to all 4 classes or not). I wonder if the daughter would have been willing to read it after hearing your student give the speech...
This is a great list. I'm with the student who read Pride and Prejudice. I discovered it in middle school and still read it at the beginning of every summer. It's how I know the break is really here.
