Poetry Friday: Today I am a Small Blue Thing

Today I am a small blue thing
Like a marble or an eye
With my knees against my mouth
I am perfectly round
I am watching you

I am cold against your skin
You are perfectly reflected
I am lost inside your pocket
I am lost against your fingers
I am falling down the stairs
I am skipping on the sidewalk
I am thrown against the sky
I am raining down in pieces
I am scattering like light
Scattering like light
Scattering like light

Today I am a small blue thing
Made of China, made of glass
I am cool and smooth and curious, I never blink
I am turning in your hand
Turning in your hand

I am cold against your skin
You are perfectly reflected
I am lost inside your pocket
I am lost against your fingers
I am falling down the stairs
I am skipping on the sidewalk
I am thrown against the sky
I am raining down in pieces
I am scattering like light
Scattering like light
Scattering like light

Today I am a small blue thing
Like a marble or an eye
I am cool and smooth and curious, I never blink
I am turning in your hand
Turning in your hand
Turning in your hand
Small blue thing
Turning in your hand
Turning in your hand

I like this song! Had the pleasure of seeing her perform this years ago.

I'd not heard this before. A curious and haunting song - I really like it. I may have to come back and listen again.

Hi Ruth, It is a lovely song, makes one want to listen again and again (repeating, repeating). I love imagining where the mind starts creating, what sparked this, and so on?

Suzanne Vega is one of my favorite singer-songwriters. I don't think I've heard this one yet. So haunting, as Donna mentioned.

This brings back memories -- a favorite when I was in college.

I remember also loving "The Queen and the Soldier" from this album.

Yes, Janet, you introduced me to Suzanne Vega!

So late to this post, I know, but I just had to tell you how much I appreciate that you posted this video. So many memories flooding back with this hypnotic song! Totally unrelated to her songwriting talents, my special Suzanne Vega memory was serving her goose liver pate at an event at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. It was during the fall of 1988, my senior year in college, when I was taking a semester "abroad" to do a theater program in New York City.
