Try playing the vocabulary game at FreeRice.com. For every word you get right, ten grains of rice will be donated through the UN to help end world hunger.
I don't get it, exactly. If these companies can donate, why don't they donate anyway, without me playing a game? But on the other hand, I'm enjoying the game...

Ooh, that is fun. And here's how it works: the people running the game are getting advertising revenue from the little ads that appear on the bottom. They donate the ad revenue to the UN Food Programme (or whatever it said in the FAQ, I just skimmed it). It's sort of like if my local newspaper decided to send ad revenue to the UN instead of using it for whatever they use it for. My new word for the day: natation. :^)
Yeah, I read the FAQ, but it still seems kind of odd to me. Am I really more likely to buy from any of those companies because their name is on the bottom of the screen while I play? I guess I must be, but I don't like the idea that I'm that easy to manipulate.
I totally agree. i hardly even notice ads these days - not online, not in the newspaper (except advertising circulars, i flip through the oens for stores i frequent). But somebody must be paying attention, for companies to keep having such big advertising budgets!! Why don't they divert their ad budget to charitable donations? Something in their market research must lead them to believe it's worth while... But it's all a mystery to me (having no practical OR theoretical knowledge of the biz!).
