National Poetry Month, Day 7

Have you listened to Pádraig Ó Tuama's new podcast, Poetry Unbound? He reads a single poem and talks about it in a short episode. Here's one from January, about Aimee Nezhukumatathil's poem "On Listening to Your Teacher Take Attendance."

On Listening to Your Teacher Take Attendance
by Aimee Nezhukumatathil

Breathe deep even if it means you wrinkle
your nose from the fake-lemon antiseptic

of the mopped floors and wiped-down
doorknobs. The freshly soaped necks

and armpits. Your teacher means well,
even if he butchers your name...

Here's the rest at the Poetry Foundation.

Oh, my teacher friends, remember taking attendance? Remember your classroom? Remember all those names that you learned to pronounce and spell at the beginning of the year, and now you only see on Google Classroom or whatever online platform you are learning to use?

But here's something happy: the Progressive Poem!

Today's line is here.
