English as Official Language

I have stacks of grading to do, but instead I am reading about English as the Official Language.

Here's some of the stuff I'm reading:

Adventures in Semantics
U.S. English, Inc.
Arguments for and against
Ban English, instead!
The idea of English as an official language is "silly."

OK, I'm off to grade papers, allegedly written in English ONLY!

Ruth, have you seen or read "Do You Speak American?" It's great. At least it is if you're into the linguistics stuff, and you seem to be so far.

I wonder what Europeans and other countries that speak more than 1 language are thinking about us right now. Most American's don't need a declaration to speak English only, they do it without any encouragement at all.

I guess it's not just English only, but more that others need to learn it. I keep coming back to the idea that it's because we're so self-centered. We go to other countries and expect them to speak English, then when they come here we want them to speak English as well. The gall!

Hey Bridget, one of the links is from their site - the one about banning English. You should read it - it's great. Other than that, I haven't explored their site, but I will now. Thanks!
