Twenty-six years ago, my husband and I spent Christmas in northern Japan, and we were taken to see swans that had migrated from Siberia. I remember we joked about how unbelievable it was that this frigid place was warmer and more pleasant than the home they had left in Siberia. I don't know now if they were Tundra Swans or Whooper Swans; both of these winter in Japan and spend the rest of the year in Siberia. This happened long before I was interested in birds and eager to identify them correctly. But I was overwhelmed by the beauty of the swans.
